Gather Materials
Start by gathering your materials. As you’re looking for fabric, consider any scraps that you may have in your crafting supplies. You can also use an actual scarf instead of fabric, and turn your favorite one into a headband that’s easier to wear. Consider color and texture. The fabric shouldn’t be too thick or stiff as it won’t conform well to the shape of the DIY headband.

Cut Fabric
Start by cutting your fabric. You’ll need a strip that’s about 3 inches wide by about 22 inches long.
Lay Fabric Flat
Next, fold the fabric in half lengthwise. Place the headband in the fold at the halfway point. Before moving on, it’s important that you make the fabric lay flat on the underside of the headband. Otherwise, you’ll feel it pressing against your head when you wear it, and it will also create a gap between your head and the headband. So ensure that the fabric is flat and smooth on the underside of the headband to prevent the final project from feeling off.
Knot Fabric
Once your fabric is laying nice and flat against the headband, tie the two ends of fabric into a single knot, with the knot showing on the top of the headband. You may need to manipulate or twist the fabric a bit to get the shape that you like for the knot. You’ll also need to make sure that the fabric emerges from the knot with the right sides facing up.
Prepare Glue
Heat up your glue gun and run a thin strip of glue along the side edge of one side of the headband.
Apply Glue to Fabric
Begin glueing one side of fabric down along that strip of glue. Fold the unfinished edge under so that it’s tucked in and won’t show any fraying. You may want to do this step in sections of one to two inches at a time to make sure that the fabric doesn’t get bunched or messy. Repeat this process with both sides of fabric and on both the front and back of the headband.
Finish Ends
Once all of your fabric edges are glued down, trim the ends so that there’s an excess of about 1 1/2 inches beyond the end of the headband. Fold the end of the fabric as though you are wrapping a present, and make an extra fold in on itself to hide the unfinished edge. Glue these ends down on the inside of the headband.
Wrap Thread
For a little extra security and a fun detail, wrap a section of embroidery thread around each end of the headband. Place a dot of glue on the inside of one end of the headband, sink the end of the embroidery thread into the glue. Then let it cool. Following this step, wrap the embroidery thread around the headband over and over until it feels secure. Glue the other end to the back of the headband as well, and trim any excess thread. Repeat this on both sides of the headband.
